Wood is the energy of spring. After the quiet and stillness of winter, nature bursts forth with hope and optimism to create the new growth of the season. In us, wood creates the gall bladder and liver meridians. These meridians are the parts of us that move forward in life, that envision, plan and make decisions regarding our capabilities and our life’s direction. The wood element is active and yang as opposed to winter which is passive and yin. This yang chi is like a seedling that pushes us forward, to give us a vision of our potential, to initiate growth and change whilst providing us with the determination to achieve that development. This element is innovative and creative and requires upward rising chi to give birth to new projects, ideas, and events. It involves us being able to see where we are going in life and to take action on that.

The wood element is very sensitive to feelings of frustration, anger, resentment and hopelessness. These emotions produce disharmonious movement of chi and can cause stagnation within the gall bladder and liver meridians and can immobilise action. Without the upward rising of chi it becomes difficult for us to initiate change and we can become ‘stuck’ in life with little or no growth. The liver stores emotional issues we have not yet dealt with, so it can be the home of anger and frustration. Repressed emotions, particularly anger can often lead to depression, hopelessness and feeling as if we are without a purpose. Dealing with such feelings and moving stuck or stagnant chi we enable ourselves to flow forward in life with hope and optimism.

If the liver and the gallbladder are supported and balanced during spring, the entire body will benefit immediately and be set up with the best possible health foundation for the seasons to come. Over-eating, especially of rich, greasy foods, makes the liver work too hard and causes it to becomes sluggish. This causes the chi to not be distributed properly. Stagnant liver chi is also caused by lack of exercise this too can cause feelings of sluggishness and can also lead to anger and frustration and a sense of being held back. Include the following foods this spring, sweet potato, carrot, beetroot, mint, ginger, spring onions, lemon, pine nuts, oregano, rosemary, grains, legumes and seeds.

If you are lacking motivation or have not managed to break out of the stillness and calmness of winter, or have recognised some patterns in yourself that I have touched on in this article and would like to move through those, then please take advantage of my springtime special and book your session today.

*Springtime special – all initial consults will be valued at $80.00 (usually priced $110.00).

Water is the energy of winter, it is the time of year when everything slows down, when nature retreats, recovering its vital energy for the next cycle of seasons. In us, it is the energy of the bladder and kidney meridians. It is a time of restoration, of stockpiling our resources, of contemplation, of gentle nurturing and getting in touch with our inner wisdom. Water is the most yin of all the elements and is associated with qualities such as rest, decrease, passivity, inwardness and tranquillity. Winter therefor is a powerful time to sink into the depths of our being, to reflect on the cycles just gone and to nurture the seed of our potential. This period of rest and recovery allows us to leap forth come spring, when nature bursts forth with growth and activity in the upward motion that is the growth of life. Take the time to nurture yourself this winter by eating warming healthy foods, getting more rest and earlier nights and by not driving or pushing yourself so hard. Growth and action is not meant to be consistent or continuous – it happens in cycles just like everything in nature. There is much we can learn by observing and following nature. I thank Traditional Chinese Medicine for bringing me in closer alignment and giving me the capacity to observe myself through her. It’s not often that I allow myself the time to rest and relax yet since the turn of winter I have been spending more time meditating, practising yoga, having kinesiology, reiki and massages, eating wholesome and warming foods and getting plenty of sleep – all wonderfully rejuvenating for my mind, body and soul. I also enjoy plenty of Epsom salt baths in winter – if you have not come across the multitude of health benefits from Epsom salts then Google it and get yourself familiar with them. Above all, tune in and listen to what YOUR body is crying out for this winter and treat it to exactly that…

When I first started using flower essences in Kinesiology I did not quite get or appreciate the tremendous healing power of plants, particularly flowers, which is the most concentrated area of the plants life-force. The name conjured up an image that was ‘floral’ as opposed to one of profound healing, I felt they lacked substance and lacked the credibility that other herbal tinctures had. My mind had casted a judgement, and occasionally I would cringe in clinic (especially if I was working on a man) when I was required to work the essence into a meridian, chakra or the energetic field. I would think OMG what are they thinking! The fish slapping add would come to mind. I never saw the add myself, but I’ve heard enough about it from others to get the picture. My ego desperately did not want to place me in that same category. In life it can be easy to cast judgements, especially if we lack wisdom and insight, as our minds are very well equipped in discrediting all that is not familiar. How far from their truth I was! It wasn’t until taking an essence for a conditioned belief (one that was limiting and of no value in my life) and having this belief completely eradicated in a matter of weeks that I was able to see the potent power of flower essence remedies. I had carried that belief around with me for years and all of a sudden it had completely gone, creating a space for its positive counterpart and positive change in my life. It is of no wonder essences of living flowers are among the most ancient natural healing modalities. Flower essences can help us recognise, resolve or release different conditioned ways of perceiving the world and can help us experience greater well-being and harmony in our lives. They support us in extending our consciousness beyond its present state. I am so thankful that I get to work with their energy and vibration – they are an integral part of my practice

You can have gluten sensitivity without having full blown celiac disease and it can be just as devastating to your health. Sadly, a great number of people with gluten sensitivity are suffering from a wide range of health complaints yet are unaware that their health problems stem from a gluten intolerance/sensitivity. Gluten, as with any food sensitivity, causes body wide inflammation and produces a wide range of effects including effects on the brain, heart, joints and digestive tract. Gluten sensitivity has been linked to most auto-immune diseases including but not limited to multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, in fact gluten sensitivity has been linked to 55 diseases in total – even autism in children! More minor complaints include fatigue, anxiety and depression – this from a grain huh… If you have any chronic illness or health complaint it is important to look for gluten sensitivity as a possible root cause. One of the primary causes of inflammation is food sensitivities, if you eat the foods that you are sensitive to, you will inflame (inflammation is one of the major causes of obesity). This causes havoc on both your digestive and immune system, leading to a host of other potential problems. Systemic inflammation has been linked to a myriad of health diseases including cancer – and unfortunately you can have inflammation without even knowing it. I refer to it as the silent assassin and it has been dubbed the 21st century’s silent killer. I don’t mean to get all serious on you but chronic inflammation can be deadly, especially over prolonged periods. If you feel gluten may be a problem for you please get in contact and we can run a serum (blood) profile to see if you are producing antibodies to gluten, gliadin and transglutaminase. This requires a blood draw from Melbourne pathology the results will be sent for analysis and then come back to me for follow up. Alternatively you can eliminate gluten from your diet completely for 2 – 4 weeks and see how you feel.

To maintain normal blood glucose, the pancreas compensates by secreting increased amounts of insulin. This is only effective temporarily and consequently insulin resistance increases. This sets the stage for type 11 diabetes due to failure and exhaustion of the insulin producing B-cells of the pancreas. There is a quick self-test that can give you an indication of the likelihood of insulin resistance – it is the waist to hip ratio. Take the measurement around your midline at the level of your belly button, divide this by the measurement of your hips. If it is greater than 0.8 – there is a chance you may have insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes you store excess fat and can be a vicious cycle as it also increases your appetite thus gaining more weight. It can cause infertility in women and low testosterone in men. The good news – it is reversible with diet and exercise! Stop eating refined sugar and grains, don’t eat processed foods, increase good fats and omega 3, balance nutritional deficiencies and exercise! The only certain way of knowing if you have insulin resistance is to do an insulin response test that measures blood glucose and insulin levels. Please private message or call my clinic if you require further information or would like to take the insulin resistance test.

The deciduous trees of my street inspired me to do a post on autumn. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Metal is the energy of autumn. It is a time when nature lets go of what it no longer needs, eliminating what is unnecessary. It marks the end of the growing season, a time of turning inward and storing only what is required for winter. Autumn therefore, is a contractive season – of gathering in, pulling back and dying off. The life cycle competes itself in autumn…
Metal is the energy of the lung (yin) and large intestine (yang) meridians. The lung receives purity, it is our source of inspiration and empowers our self-worth. It enables us to discern what is of true value, giving our lives a sense of quality and higher purpose. The large intestine defines that which we no longer need and that which is not congruent to our true self. The large intestine helps us to correctly distinguish between what is useful/useless, beneficial/harmful, right/wrong, self/non-self. Physically, the large intestine has the same eliminating role, holding onto what is of value and discarding that which is not of benefit. By letting go of impurities we are able to create a space for what we do want and how we would like ourselves to be.
Emotions that particularly have a negative effect on the metal element are grief, guilt, regret, longing and the inability to let go. It is inevitable that we will experience these emotions throughout life – but as with all emotions we should move through them, feel the pain and move on. When these feelings are intense or prolonged they can create dysfunction.
This autumn I am taking a leaf out of nature’s book, I’m making a consistent effort to shed what is no longer needed or congruent with my original nature. It’s time to get rid of the old and making room for the new. To turn inward, quieten down and start the alchemical process of turning lead into gold. Within us all we have something of great value buried deep within – which like metal can hard to find but of great value. Autumn is the perfect time to contemplate and resolve out dated ways of being, or the things you are holding onto which no longer serve your highest good.

Your subconscious is your body. It contains 95% of the processing power that runs your life! Your conscious mind contains the other 5%. Everything you have ever experienced, heard, seen, thought & felt is stored in your body as part of the subconscious mind. It is a huge database of programmed behaviours, most of which we acquired before we reached the age of six. The job of the subconscious is to create a reality out of its program, i.e. to prove the program is true! So if you have negative programming in your subconscious 95% of the time you will recreate those negative experiences in your life. This is why the subconscious mind is much more powerful than the conscious mind and why will power can be so ineffective at creating lasting change.

Our thought forms have a life force that depends on 1) the initial intensity and 2) how much it is fed by the repetition of the thought – either by the originator or by others! Thought-forms of similar character are attracted to and mutually strengthen each other. A thought of “I am fat” will attract all other similar thoughts of the same frequency. Like all other vibrations, these tend to reproduce themselves whenever an opportunity is offered to them, so if they come across another person’s mental body they tend to provoke the same thought/feeling as that of the thinker. If there for a long period of time, they can produce habits of thoughts and feelings which obscure mental vision affecting our moods and attitudes. Be careful with your thoughts – as with your thoughts – you create….

Signs and symptoms include weakness, tiredness, sleepiness, cold intolerance, constipation, poor memory, weight gain, infertility and anxiety just to name a few! Here is a basic thyroid test by endocrinologist Broda Barnes which may indicate and underactive thyroid gland. 1st thing in the morning (without any movement in bed) take your temperature using a digital oral thermometer. Normal temperature on rising should be between 36.4 C -36.9 C. If your temperature is 36.1 C or less this could indicate a compromised thyroid function or possible adrenal stress. Repeat test for 5 days consecutively at the same time each morning. Note that this is not a definitive test and may vary slightly between individuals. As for the ladies – your body temp rises at the time of ovulation due to the surge of Luteinizing hormone so don’t test at this time.
